In his book Linchpin: Are You Indispensable, Seth Godin talks about art and artists. He identifies art as “anything that's creative, passionate, and personal.” Well that certainly broadens my once close-minded definition! He also states that art is something that resonates with both the viewer and creator. He writes that “art is about intent and communication, not substances. An artist is someone who uses bravery, insight, creativity, and boldness to challenge the status quo.” Wow, now those are qualities that I’ve always wanted to posses, even before I realized that I was aspiring to be was an ‘artist’. He goes on to state that art is “a personal gift that changes the recipient. The medium doesn't matter. The intent does. Art is a personal act of courage, something one human does that creates change in another.”
As a Hope Artist, words such as creativity, intention, communication, passion, bravery, insight, boldness, gifts, change, courage and ‘challenging the status quo’, tie in very closely with our core values. We aspire to show others that hope and art are possible and attainable for everyone, no matter where you are in life.
What do you think of when you hear the words art or artist?
